Opinions about this lens differs. Some claim it is superb, other that it does not live up to its premium price. There seem to have been more sample variation with early batches of this lens than normal for Nikon, where the “bad” samples were characterised by having decentered elements. This QC problem should now be resolved.

On my sample, center sharpness is very good, even at f/2.8, but on FX, edges are soft when it is used fully bore and need stopping down to about f/5.6 to be acceptable. Significant (but easy to correct) barrel-distortion at the wide end, becoming flat around 24 mm. There is visible vignetting wide open. CA, flare and ghosting are very well controlled.

Mechanically, the lens is professional grade, with environmental seals and fast and slient AF.
