This lens us clearly intended to offer to photojournalists and others using a DX-body the equivalent of the professional grade 24-70mm f/2.8 FX – with a pricetag to match.

This is a so-called “normal” zoom, which means that it covers the zoom range you are most likely to use. If you are like most photographers, a “normal” zoom is the lens you will be using most of time, so you need to weight your options carefully.

Optical performance is also very similar to the 24-70 mm f/2.8. It has the same excellent sharpness, colour saturation, and contrast over the full zoom range as its FX counterpart. Image sharpness is excellent at f/2.8 and superb in the f/4-f/8 range. CA is well controlled. Also, like the 24-70 mm f/2.8, this lens is not immune to flare and ghosting, and there is some distortion: Barrel distortion at the wide end, vanishing around 35mm and changing to pincushion at tele end. With the large diameter of this lens, vignetting is negligible, even wide open.

The mechanical construction is solid. It is professional grade, with rubber seals to protect it against dust and moisture. There is a lot of glass: 14 elements (3 ED, 3 aspheric) in 10 groups makes this a rather heavy construction. Despite all the glass, the built-in SWF ring-motor is fast and precise.

While this lens is intended for DX, it will cover the full image circle if FX in the range 35-55 mm.
