Pre-AI Nikkors

On what Nikon DSLRs may I use pre-AI nikkors without risking damage?

One response:

D5100, D5000, D3100, D3000, D60, D40, D40x

Digital:D5100, D5000, D3100, D3000, D60, D40, D40x.
Film: F4, F3, F2, F, FM, FE.

Note that the exposure meter will not work when you use a pre-AI lens on a digital camera (use manual exposure), and there is of course no auto-focus with these lenses (but the green focus indicator will work).

For all other Nikon SLRs or DSLRs, the lens require an AI modification to avoid damaging the body.

Ken Rockwell have a very instructive page mapping Nikon Lens Compatibility. (There is also a similar page at Nikonians, but it contains some minor errors.)

For AI-S lens compatibility, and a very good description of the AI-S lens mount, see Lars Holst Hansen's Nikon AI-S compatibility chart.
