Does a camera flash gun require constant current or constant voltage?

A friend of mine is designing a power adapter to use with my Nikon SB900's in my studio. The power from the adapter will be directly given to the terminals in the battery compartment via a modification he has done (an external power jack connected to the AA battery terminals in the battery compartment) The capacity of the power adapter is 6 volts 5 amps. He wants to know if the flash require Constant Current or Constant Voltage. this is not using the external power port in the flash. I have weighed the pro and cons of this setup and decided to go with it. please let me know which to use, constant voltage or constant current.
