Compatibility of third party flashes

I have a Canon 600d camera and a Metz 48 AF-1 flashgun, but the flash seems to go off before taking a photograph. What do I need to do to get the flash working properly?

One response:

If you are using the flash in E-TTL II mode, it emits a pre-flash. This is how Canon's flash system is supposed to work, and not a fault with the flash.

If you do not want the pre-flash to be fired, the flash must be set to manual mode and E-TTL II automatic control of flash power will not be avilable.
