Microsoft joins remix culture

Microsoft Live Labs has just put out couple of videos of a new technology they call PhotoSynth. It is a software system that from an ordinary 2D starter image pulls together other 2D images relatated to it from the web and synthesises a 3D navigationable space from all these photographs. Click here to see the videos.

The technology is pretty cool in itself, but just as interesting is that this is a great example of how remix culture may work. If you had to clear the rights of all those images before you could start synthesising the 3D model, the whole thing would be rather pointless. But if the application is made to ignore image copyrights, or to work with some system for automatic clearing (e.g. Creative Commons), then this thing would really shine!
