What is the difference between a fish-eye and an ordinary wide angle lens, and which is better?

The "fish-eye" property covers 180 degrees of view with stronger distortion towards edges. Some lenses have 180 degrees coverage across diagonal, some have 180 degrees edge-to-edge (even wider).
Wide angle lenses on the other hand limit the amount of such distortion, thus do not cover as much view.
There are even zoom lenses where you get fish-eye on the wide end, and wide angle on the other.
